DART and the City of Johnston often hear from residents who want and need more transportation options. Because of this, DART and the City of Johnston partnered this spring to distribute surveys to riders and community members to collect feedback on potential changes to Local Route 5 and Express Route 91.

Possible changes to Routes 91 and 5
The changes being considered would allow Local Route 5 to run further north on Merle Hay Road to NW 70th Street and to serve Johnston City Hall, the Johnston Public Library and several new housing options along this corridor. This would provide all-day service to Johnston along the Merle Hay Corridor. In order to make this happen, DART would combine portions of Express Route 91 with Local Route 5, resulting in the following changes:

  • Route 91 would no longer exist as an express route and would no longer operate along the freeway into downtown Des Moines.
o Route 91 would combine with Route 5 and follow Merle Hay Road south to Merle Hay Mall and then into downtown Des Moines.
  • In order to operate this route and remain on schedule, it may not be possible to run a route to Pioneer Parkway.

Public meetings
DART hosted two public meetings to share draft schedules and maps reflecting the possible changes. These meetings were held:

  • Monday, July 10, 2017 at noon at Des Moines’ Franklin Avenue Library
  • Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 6 p.m. in the East Meeting Room of the Johnston Public Library

A draft schedule of the combined route for Routes 5 and 91 can be viewed here.

It is very important that we continue to hear from our riders about whether or not these possible changes would help or hurt them. Riders who would still like to provide feedback are asked to contact to DART Customer Service by calling 515-283-8100 or by emailing DART@ridedart.com.
