Fares for Food Day will benefit Des Moines Area Religious Council

Posted on November, 30 2014

For one day during this giving season all cash collected on DART buses will be donated to the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Food Pantry Network.

DART’s second annual Fares for Food Day will be held Thursday, Dec. 11. DART riders can make donations of their standard boarding fares ($1.75 for Local, $2 for Express, and $3.50 for Flex and On Call). Additionally, people who typically pay with passes or employer IDs can make cash donations of any amount that day.

Many Iowans—family, friends, neighbors and co-workers—are struggling to put food on their tables. According to the Food Bank of Iowa:

  • One in eight Iowans are food insecure,
  • One in five Iowa children does not have enough to eat and
  • 395,620 Iowans live at or below the poverty line.

The Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Food Pantry Network is the largest food pantry network in Iowa with 13 sites in Ankeny, Des Moines, Johnston, Urbandale and West Des Moines. Nearly 34,000 individuals benefited from DMARC Food Pantry Network services in 2013.
