DART will install 10 new bus shelters after the DART Commission approved a contract for the work at its November 4 meeting. Work on the shelters will be completed this winter as weather permits.
9 of the 10 new shelters will feature unique art displays from local and national artists, thanks to grant funding from Bravo Greater Des Moines, Central Iowa’s regional arts council.
Shelters will be installed at the following intersections:
Des Moines
- 6th Ave. & Indiana Ave.
- 6th Ave. & Forest Ave. (Northbound & Southbound)
- Ingersoll Ave. & 21st St.
- Ingersoll Ave. & 23rd St. (Eastbound & Westbound)
- Ingersoll Ave. & 26th St. (Eastbound & Westbound)
- SW 9th & Park Ave.
Windsor Heights
- University Ave. & 63rd St.
In addition, materials for 12 more art shelters have been ordered. Construction on those shelters is set to begin in 2026.
Bus shelters are one of the amenities DART riders request most because they make transit safer and more comfortable, especially during extreme weather.
After these shelters are installed, DART will have nearly 40 art shelters throughout major transit corridors in both urban and suburban communities, featuring artwork by both local and national artists. Costs associated with the structural components of the shelter are paid for through federal funds from DART’s capital infrastructure budget.
