DART Celebrates 10 Years

In 2006, local and state leaders created the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority, or DART, out of the Des Moines Metropolitan Transit Authority, or MTA. Since its inception, DART has grown rapidly, adding more service in the past four years than had been added in the previous 50 years.

Today, DART is the largest public transit agency in Iowa, serving 18 cities in and around Polk County. Thanks to its regional approach, DART is designed to create a comprehensive, sustainable transportation network for all of Central Iowa.

Accomplishments in 10 Years

  • Added Sunday service to serve riders 7 days a week
  • Created an Unlimited Access program for employers to help their employees ride DART for free
  • Began the free D-Line shuttle service between the Iowa State Capitol and the Western Gateway Park
  • Added hybrid buses to DART’s fleet
  • Implemented the DART Forward 2035 Transit Services Plan
  • Opened DART Central Station, a central transit hub for Greater Des Moines
  • Expanded service hours to run earlier in the mornings and later in the evenings
  • Added technology tools including an app, text messaging system and real-time data to know where the nearest bus is at any time

The Next 10 Years & More: DART Forward 2035

DART is currently updating the region’s master plan for public transit, DART Forward 2035. This plan ensures we meet the needs of the growing region now and in the future.

An initial public input phase was completed in the spring of 2016 and the draft plan will be open for public input in the fall of 2016. Check back on ridedart.com, like DART on Facebook or follow @ridedart on Twitter to receive updates on the release of the draft plan in coming weeks.
