Bus Rapid Transit Study

The possiblity of developing "bus-rapid transit" along portions of University and Ingersoll Avenues in Des Moines is being actively explored by the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority.

Bus-rapid transit – often described as rail-like service that is delivered with buses – can include many features to improve the level of service along a bus route. Examples include bus stations with real-time arrival and departure information, on-street fare boxes to speed up boarding times, separate branding, and technology to change stoplights to accelerate travel times.include stations, on-street fareboxes, separate branding and, most importantly, high-frequency service.

This fall, DART identified the new Route 60 -- a soon-to-be-launched loop route on Ingersoll and Univeristy Avenues between downtown and 42nd Street -- as the corridor that would be studied for possible additional investment. Additional corridors could be studied in the future.
