Provide Feedback on major changes to DART service in West Des Moines
DART is hosting public meetings and events, and asking riders to complete a survey, in May to collect input from riders of our services in West Des Moines. DART is proposing to discontinue service on Local Route 72 – West Des Moines Loop, replacing it with a new DART On Demand microtransit zone and re-routing a portion of Local Route 52 – Valley West/Jordan Creek to travel on University Avenue west of Valley West Mall.

Other ways to give feedback
Riders who cannot attend a public meeting or event are still invited to complete DART's survey. The survey is available online by clicking here, or paper copies can be picked up from, and dropped off with, DART Customer Service at DART Central Station (620 Cherry Street). In addition, DART will have staff available at various times throughout the month of May onboard Local Route 72 buses, and at Platform E at DART Central Station to answer questions.
Riders can share feedback with Customer Service by:
- Stopping by the window at DART Central Station
- Emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, or
- Calling 515-283-8100 and selecting option 0.
DART staff will use the feedback collected to finalize plans for DART On Demand in West Des Moines. If changes are made, they will occur sometime after Fall 2022.
What is DART On Demand?
DART On Demand in West Des Moines will be a point-to-point service, allowing riders to book on demand trips to travel within a designated zone. This service will operate using smaller transit buses, with riders sharing trips with others who are traveling at similar times or to similar locations. All buses are equipped to provide service to riders using mobility devices and will also include bike racks. Rides can be reserved using the DART On Demand app, through a web portal, or by calling DART Customer Service, and can be booked as you need them or reserved in advance.
DART is proposing a fare of $1.75 for trips on DART On Demand in West Des Moines. Riders who qualify for half-fare will be able to pay half the cost to ride the service. Proposed hours of service would be:
- Weekdays: 4:15 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.
- Saturdays: 5 a.m. – 11 p.m.
- Sundays: 6:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Planning for the Future of Transit
DART used community input to create a new vision for the future of transit in central Iowa, analyzing its current service types and evaluating changes that could be made to ensure resources are used efficiently while still serving the region effectively. As part of these efforts, DART’s routes were reviewed, including routes with lower ridership like Local Route 72 to see if changes could be made to how these services operate to serve more people in DART’s member communities.
